Walter Devereux
Walter Devereux is steadily becoming one of those twitter phenomena that, seemingly, come from nowhere. In fact, Walter has been carefully working away on the edge of the arts radar for 30 plus years now. Walter’s practice has persistently interrogated the notion of boredom, specifically within the context of late 20th and early 21st century Capitalism. Using a variety of mediums from Kleenex tissues to the Wessler Koch handgun, Devereux has consistently created situations or ‘set ups’, in his language, in which the viewer is tested to the limits of tolerance. Previous set ups have had significant results. Probably most infamous among cognoscenti was the ‘Heathrow Departure lounge’ set up (2001), which resulted in Devereux being questioned by Intelligence Services for 36 hours. Out of this experience he created the ‘Hooded’ set up, which was withdrawn at very short notice from 2003 Venice Biennale following British governmental pressure. Walter has asked that he be Angry School’s expert on Joy.
